Bergen county has the second highest percentage of adults 65 and over among all counties in new jersey. 16.4 percent of bergen county residents are over age 65 compared to new jersey overall at 15.1 percent. valley health primetime was created to help older adults stay healthy by teaching them good health and providing opportunities to remain socially active. in 2019, valley health primetime offered 52 free programs to over 1,500 older adults. additionally, valley's community health department works with a number of low-income senior housing facilities to provide, screenings, education, donations, and resources for its residents. each year valley dining prepares over 23,000 meals for community meals, inc. and financial resources to support homebound older adults in valley's service area. valley's community care clinic had 6,230 visits in 2019. they provide care at no cost to the patients who qualify in 16 (medical, neurology, gi, general surgery, breast surgery, rheumatology, ophthalmology, gyn, ob, pediatrics, pulmonary, cardiology, pain, dermatology, orthopedics, and urology) specialty clinics. they continue to provide care to children in foster care in bergen and passaic counties that require complex medical and subspecialty care. by partnering with area religious institutions, valley is able to work with underserved populations to help meet access to care needs of their members by providing on-site health fairs, screenings, and education on various health topics, as well as connect individuals to resources. 3,500 people participated in free screenings provided by valley and over 37,500 people participated in free education programs in 2019.not only has valley enlisted the services of uber health to provide transportation for patients who qualify based on income level, but valley offers a free non-emergent transportation service for patients who are unable to drive or have access to public transportation. valley health system has also partnered with dispatchhealth, a nationwide on-demand healthcare company to deliver high-quality urgent care to northern new jersey residents of all ages, in the comfort of their homes. dispatchhealth and valley are working together to increase accessibility to affordable care for seniors or busy working parents, both of who can benefit from staying home for treatment. in fact, the medical cost for a dispatchhealth visit is nearly one-tenth of the medical cost for an er visit.

1,719 people participated in cancer education and screening programs in 2019. breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer, as well as nutrition and cancer were topics of interest. additionally, smoking and vaping were topics that were widely discussed. over 2,500 people attended free support groups offered by valley in 2019. valley also provides meeting space for three 12-step programs and support groups for alzheimer's new jersey, children and adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (chadd), and crones/colitis foundation. another 5,507 people attended mental health and substance abuse education programs on topics including positive coping, winter blues, anxiety issues, bullying, mindfulness, palliative care, managing stress, and naloxone training. 520 people attended weekly guided imagery sessions and an additional 441 people attended the new drumming circle, an evidence-based, mind-body activity that uses the drum as a tool for personal expression and helps to lessen the feelings of burnout and fatigue. 1,190 people attended programs on arthritis, osteoporosis, and back pain. arthritis management and falls prevention were popular topics along with joint replacement. more than 200 community residents turned out for "joints in motion" an informative event focused on orthopedics and joint replacements presented in conjunction with stryker orthopaedics and held at stryker's corporate and manufacturing headquarters in mahwah.
