About CharityIndex

Financial transparency for every U.S. nonprofit — free, independent, and built entirely on official IRS data.

CharityIndex helps donors, journalists and researchers look inside any of the ~1.9 million tax-exempt organizations registered with the IRS: where the money comes from, where it goes, what leadership is paid, and how it all changes year over year.

Our mission

Americans give more than half a trillion dollars to charity every year — and most of it is given on trust alone. Our mission is to make that trust verifiable: to give every donor, however small their gift, the same clear view of a nonprofit's finances, governance and trajectory that professional grantmakers have — free, in plain language, for every organization in the country.

We believe transparency compounds. When donors can see where money actually goes, well-run organizations attract more support, poorly-run ones face honest questions, and the whole sector gets stronger. Everything we build — the A+ to F rating, the donor tools, the open methodology — serves that one goal: know a charity before you give.

Where the data comes from

  • IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (BMF) — the registry of every recognized tax-exempt organization, refreshed monthly.
  • E-filed Form 990 returns — the annual public reports nonprofits file with the IRS: revenue, expenses, balance sheets, compensation, grants and contractors.

Every number on the site is exactly what the organization reported to the IRS. We don't collect payments from charities, sell ratings, or accept fees for placement — see our methodology for how grades are computed.

Independence

CharityIndex is an independent research tool. We are not affiliated with the IRS or any organization listed on the site. Profiles exist for every registered organization automatically; being listed is neither an endorsement nor an accusation.
